sweet Coop Girl Daisy

It's a beautiful Sunday here.  I hope you're enjoying marvelous weather where you are as well.  After a couple of days of off and on heat and humidity, the people and the animals of Cobble Hill Farm are quite happy.

I feel like I'm getting things accomplished this weekend which is always nice.  I did a thorough cleaning of the refrigerator and freezer, and went through the stand-alone freezer to update my list of what's in there.  I am making 4 scents of soap today plus sugar scrub cubes, getting some things put up in the freezer for use this winter, catching up laundry and cleaning the house.  And watering the garden.  The anticipated rain that was coming with the cool down never reached us.  Luckily, though, we have more rain water saved up so it will be put to good use.

Sad news in the coop, our sweet Coop Girl Daisy passed away this week.  J found her on the floor of the coop one morning.  She hasn't laid eggs in over a year {we can tell because she laid the only white eggs} so I'm not sure what was going on with her.  She acted perfectly fine and was running around up until they went to bed the night before her passing.  J feels she may have either been pushed off of the shelf she was sleeping on or fallen off because of the way she was laying on the floor.  She will definitely be missed.

Oliver did not feel well this week.  He actually had quite a rough week.  I think he pulled a muscle earlier in the week when racing back to the house and tripping as he flew up the deck stairs.  He used all upper muscle trying to keep himself from falling through the back of the stairs and I think possibly pulled something while doing that.  He is finally starting to feel better.  It's hard to figure out what's wrong with him ever since his surgery.  He is now extremely sensitive to pain and gets very panicked and sullen when he doesn't feel good, afraid it will feel like it did when he was very sick I suppose.  He just sits and shakes.  All day.  It's awful.

The garden is slowly winding down.  We are collecting the last of the cucumbers and green beans, as well as watermelon, cantaloupe, beets, carrots, broccoli, kohlrabi, peppers, eggplant, lettuce, scallions, asian pears, tons of tomatoes and the last of the corn was picked at the beginning of the week.  Today I'm processing and freezing corn, poblano peppers, broccoli, and green beans.

On the canning "to-do" list for this week is:  Dill Pickles {trying a slightly different recipe and this group will be water-bath canned to last longer}, Bread and Butter Pickles, Jalapeno Jelly, Jalapeno-Peach Jelly, Spiced Peaches, Asian Pickled Carrots, Carrot Cake Jam, Spiced Blueberry Jam {using some of our frozen blueberries}, Tomato Juice Cocktail, Tomato Basil Jam, and Tomato-Basil Spaghetti Sauce.  I will try to post all the recipes.

We did not grow the peaches we are canning.  Instead, we'll be using peaches we purchased from a fellow-vendor at the farmer's market we sell at.  They are sweet and delicious!

On the menu this week:  Baked Flounder with Rice and Steamed Green Beans; Smoked Baby Back Ribs with Strawberry-Chipotle BBQ Sauce, Mac and Cheese and Squash Casserole; Chicken A'La King with Rice; Homemade Ravioli with Meat Sauce and Salad; Whole Roasted Chicken with Smashed Potatoes and Creamy Kohlrabi; and Salisbury Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy and Steamed Green Beans.
