our most impressive icicle!

my kitchen helpers - Oliver and Emerson

flavored salt directions coming soon!

We've had a dusting of snow added to our 6-8 inches both Saturday and Sunday.  Emerson, of course, assumes the snow came just for him.  He loves it.  Running, jumping, eating, playing and then hurrying in to sit next to the pellet stove when his little paws are too cold.  We have icicles all around our house, forming as the snow melts off the roof.  You can see from the photos above that they are beautiful in the sunlight.

This weekend was not productive at all.  I've been battling a sinus infection and I'm hoping I'm winning.  I guess only time will tell.

My kitchen helpers, Oliver and Emerson, made sure to supervise my every move while working in the kitchen this weekend.  I don't know how I could do it without them!

The chickens are not happy about the cold or the snow.  They dread them both.  Last week they had to spend a couple of days in the coop - the temperatures were negative at night and only 11 to 12 degrees during the day.  Just too cold for them.  When they finally were let out again they chattered, cooed and were sincerely thrilled.  It was too cute.

Oliver was going through a phase the past month or so where we weren't sure if he was sick, in pain, or what.  After trying a couple of other things, on a whim, my vet had us try a diffuser with D.A.P.  Have you used this?  I'll write more about it in the next day or two but it seemed to have done the trick!  My little man is almost back to his normal self and I can't tell you how relieved I am.

Jackson has been wearing his naughty pants around the house again.  Yup!  The guy just can't stay out of trouble.  More on that tomorrow.....

Thank you to all our new followers and visitors.  Welcome!!  I am working on a few things to write about this month - flavored salt recipes, a story about eggs (cleaning, storing, using, etc), more about voluntary simplicity, more baking from the Bread Bible, organization, and more homemade dog treats.  I hope you'll check back with us!

Hoping you all had a wonderful weekend!!

8 Steps To Creating Your Own Simple Homemade Life

Simple Living

As a follow-up to “What Is Simple Living”, these are steps (goals) that I’ve been using and will continue to use this year on my own path to a simple, homemade life.  I shared that I come from a family of collectors and that was my first challenge – purging the collections.  It was emotional and difficult at times but I can honestly tell you that I am thrilled that I did it.

So the collections are...

The BEST Deviled Eggs

January 17, 2018

When we first purchased chickens we hadn't thought through the fact that we were 2 people with a dozen laying hens. That meant 12 eggs about every 26 hours. We certainly had no trouble finding people we could gift our beautiful eggs to, but we also wanted to come up with delicious ways to use some of the excess ourselves. I've always loved deviled eggs but when I came across this recipe and...

Real Food Made Simple: Making The Switch

January 16, 2018

Healthy Eating

Eating can be complicated. What is "real" food? Should I eat carbs? Should I go vegan? (more on plant-based eating in an upcoming post) When I first decided to switch to eating a diet consisting only of whole food I thought that it wouldn’t be hard because we rarely eat processed food. Or so I thought. When you really think about what you buy, it’s amazing to see that, sure enough, processed food...
